In 1984, seven members from the Swedish Church played 9 holes of golf. We had such a good time that it was decided to play a few holes more often, and from that day we played on the last Sunday of each month. In 1986 following a game at Frankston with 16 players, we were having supper together, and it was then decided to start a social Golf Club - and thus began the “Royal Scandinavian Golf Club”. A letter was sent to Prince Bertil of Sweden asking for his support as Patron of the Club, which he accepted with pleasure.
Prince Bertil
The first Committee was elected with Nils Vejby President, Arthur Spångberg Secretary, Eric Johanson Treasurer & Yvonne Svärdsén Club Captain. One important condition for entry to the Club is that all members speak a Scandinavian language. The priest at the time, Staffan Rönnegård, gave the support of Swedish Church, and allowed the Club to use the Church address, 21 St Georges Road Toorak so we introduced into our Rules that all Club members are to be a financial member of the Swedish Church in Melbourne.
The idea of the Club was, and still is, that Scandinavians should come together and have a good time and have a chance to speak their mother language.
